We headed off for dinner with the typical Japanese style directions, "from the station cross the tracks, then walk to the 7-11 and hang a left and after a bit you'll know when your there". It was very easy to find with a long line of people and a simple sign "eat ramen here".

Miki proclaimed the the Shio (Salt flavored) was the best she had ever had and actually finished the whole bowl. For some strange reason and a first for this trip I didn't order the spicy Ramen and had the Roasted Garlic Chashu Ramen it was totally amazing, the Chashu (Roasted Pork) was very tender and passed Nagasaka's Chashu test with flying colors as it was about half an inch thick and stood on end very nicely.

For us this means changing all the batteries in the clocks, clean and repair all the light fixtures and what ever needs renewal. So, we needed to head off to one of the main stations to replace a gas hose for the cooking stove. There is a good ramen place up the hill in Minami-Senri, and they serve a good bowl of spicy tonkotsu ramen with really nice chashu (roasted pork).

Chashu is an art form onto itself, I once sent a week on the side of El Capitan debating what the perfect Chashu should be with Nagaska (A member of the climbing team below us, Nagasaka and Takeshi were traveling from Japan to Yosemite. Because of the way we switched belays on the wall, I would end up hanging out with Nagasaka and Rex was hanging out with Takeshi, this went on for days, without us seeing the other). After days of debate on the topic we came to the following conclusion... The perfect chashu should have the perfect balance of fat and meat with a deep roast flavor well into the meat, then when added to the hot ramen it loosens up to the point that it falls apart in your mouth but not in your hashi (chopsticks) or in the ramen itself. When cold it should be think enough to stand on end.

There I found the melons are cheap at the moment... only about $80....

Some time in the early eighties in California and then later accost the country we were robbed of the choice of baked vs fried Apple pies, and I'm betting there was some prude PC PTA group behind the loss.

It's not about becoming clean, it's about soaking in very hot water and relaxing. In most households the tub is fulled and stays warn, then in order by household rank everyone takes a turn starting with guests, elders, father, kids then wife. Yes, if you stay late in at someone's house you might be invited to soak and relax and you might even get a few kids thrown in.

Ofuro is actually a personal hot spring (Onsen) that one can visit everyday, but most people in Japan visit onsen often, it's no shock when looking at advertisement pictures in almost all magazines, at the train stations and on the walls of the trains. Japan loves it's onsens, in the northern areas the monkeys will soak for hours in the natural hot springs in pools adjacent to humans. Onsen trips are popular destinations for company trips, school classes (you have never seen bedlam till the peaceful onsen your visiting gets overrun by hundreds of middle school girls), families and reunions of old friends.

A few thing to know about going to an onsen;
Men and woman are split to different areas when bathing, there are a few that have mixed pools or even privet outdoor pools attached to a traditional tatami style room.
Every one is naked, get over it, it's about relaxing and talking to people and enjoy the escape from the fast pace of modern life (hadaka no tsukiai).

My first experience was years ago on a family trip to Awagi Island, we stopped off at a small onsen. Shinta at 5 years old at the time was left to teach me the proper educate of this most honored ritual. At that point I had been reading about Japanese culture and understood the basics, you get there, put your stuff in a basket, wash yourself very well, then go over take a bowl of water from the hot spring and rinse, then slowly get in the 42'c water and quietly enjoy the peace and quite, then go to the next area and repeat, all very Zen. So, he got us locker put all of our stuff in it and grabbed key, quickly headed to the wash area, sat me on a small stool showed me the soap and how to use the water controls, then in an burst of energy he did the fastest wash job on the planet ( still not sure if the bar of soap touched his body) ran over grabbed a bowl of water and poured it over his head as he dove into the hot hot hot spring. I finished washing off and joined him in the spring where he was sitting, then just as I got settled Shinta jumped up and started to collect all the small stools and bowls and pile them up under water towards the middle of the pool. The just as I was almost relaxed, he ran over showed me the key to the locker and stated he was done. Thus ended my first trip to an onsen and a rather stressful Zen experience.

As I watched our bags run though the x-ray with all the nifty stuff in my luggage glowing different colors, I only one thought comes to my mind.... New game concept... Who can arrange the items for best representation of a detailed picture, only using the items you would normally travel with ( Liquid shows up blue and red and metal being shades), as I alway have my laptop power supplies, USB cables, tooth paste and soap, I think I'll first go for a simple smiley or maple leaf...

A new record has been laid down, 28 mins airplane to train transfer... A short transfer at Tokyo Station to the Hikari Shinkonsen ( Japanese Bullet Train ) with a quick tech handoff from Shimpei for our cellphones and my new datacard, and we're off to Osaka.

While wading though the sea of little Japanese businessmen at Tokyo station, Mikiko and I both started laughing, people in Japan are really short. Not that I'm at tall at 5' 8" with my little Japanese wife being 5' 10", the original reason she started traveling to the US in the first place was to find clothing that fit. Now in the states they have started a public service campaign that kids under 4' 6" should have child safety seats in cars. But in Japan they have a different style of transportation safety, train stuffing ( more to come on this subject later, and maybe even some video).

From Shin-Osaka station we jump a few local trains and we're home, a nice relaxing soak on the furro, and crash... thus ends the 24 hours of sitting marathon...

Kushikatsu is a style of food from the Konsi area of Japan (Osaka, Nara, Kobe, Kyoto, Suita). In a few respects it is like going to a sushi bar, the food itself is an art form of flavors and textures. There are also different levels of taste and quality, from sticks you can buy at the local market, stands on the train platform to high quality restaurants.

The master and his helpers prepare the sticks at the counter at Koten's restaurant in Suita. The owner and master at Koten develops the menu daily based on fresh ingredients, the menu itself is a mystery until it is unveiled as you eat. The full menu is 25 sticks, but at any point in the meal you can call “STOP” and then you only need to take anything that is currently in the fryer. The restaurant bills you in groups of five sticks with the full course being about $35.

This style of eating is also renowned for drinking good Sake (rice wine), Shochu (Japanese vodka) and Chuhi (a mixed drink of Shochu and different juices). When going out it’s always good to remember to take the train, bus or taxi, while Japan is very reasonable about drinking and has no rules about drinking in public as it is part of the culture, they do have new laws when it comes to drinking and driving.

On the table is a bowl of fresh veggies to snack on while waiting as each stick is prepared, next to that is our dipping tray ( Tonkotsu, Ponzu, Seasoned Salt, ketchup and hot mustard ).

Nice strong Japanese style coffee, we are set....

The sausages taste similar to ones that our Uncle Sam and Elva used to get made from pigs they raised, the traveling butcher that serviced their area was something special ( and if you ever have a full sized pig rendered into meat products you will have more then you can store yourself and will end up just like Sam and Elva giving sausages to every family member, neighbor, friend and a few strangers).

It was a bowl of rice, bowl of Miso soup, a bit of Tofu and a plate of little fish to share. Nice typical breakfast in Japan.

First step was to get our JR Rail Passes so we can ride any train in Japan for the time we are here. Then take the Narita Express train to Shinjuku station and find Shimpei ( he was waiting for as at the platform and solved that whole issue ), Cross from the JR line to the complete other end of the station to the Keio Line, dragging the heavy luggage, to get to Shimpei's house ( and yes we have almost the same square footage in the RV as he has in his apartment ).

Next was to get Shimpei's car, and get some Ramen for dinner. So, we headed to a Ramen stand that we had been to before that had good ramen, this time the taste was completely different ( still good ) but not anything like the one we remembered. After eating Miki and I asked Shimpei if the owner changed, he said nope just the flavor changes often and some times it's good, bad or awesome but worth the risk.

After Ramen we headed back to Shimpei's place and packed the car for the midnight run back to Osaka. We were on the road by 10pm and headed out of Tokyo and for the mountain route south. The we took the Chuoudou Highway that is a toll based road from Tyoko to Osaka, it costs about $109 to drive it, but you do not need to get off the highway at anytime as they have rest stops, restaurants and other attractions along the way. Stopped a few times for rest breaks and to buy Omiyage of pickles and hand made soba noodles. I was able to sleep in the car for almost the whole trip, while Mikiko and Shimpei talked and listened to music. Unfortunately Shimpei was the only person that could drive since Mikiko and I didn't get the international driver licences this trip. Poor Shimpei......

We pulled into Osaka just after 4am jumped in the ofuro (A Japanese Style bath where you need to take a shower and get clean in order to jump in the tub and soak) and crashed on our futon (A Japanese style bed that is laid on a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatami" taget="_blank" tatami floor.

A few months ago Miki and I went down to the Torrance area to get the hard top installed on the Geo Tracker, after the install we headed to the Japanese market, while walking about we found JTB was selling round trip to Japan for $299 each. After enquiring at travel desk we confirmed the rate and found there was also about $200 in taxes, fuel surcharges and airport use fees... Still round trip to Japan for $500 was hard to pass up.... We jumped.....
So, we looked over the callender and figured the best time would be the middle two weeks in November and booked it on the spot.

The day finally came and we headed off to the LAX for our cheap flight to Japan on United. The ticket was an E-Ticket, so we bypassed the majorly long check-in line (more then 200 people) and walked directly up to the self check-in followed the prompts and finished in a few minutes. It worked fairly well, it would not accept my mileage number and to the counter at the gate, and the upgrade options were not presented well and it told us to talk to the counter at the gate. It did prompt us to upgrade to something called Economy Plus about five times.

Once to the gate we got some Starbucks coffee and waited for the counter to open....... About 30 minutes from boarding the counter at the gate finally opened and they were able to update the information for us, but only after waiting almost to the boarding time in the very long line to talk to them.....

Once on the plane (an old 747, that should have been scheduled for retirement a few years ago) we found and squeezed into our seats. With two inches of space from my knees to the seat in front of me, and that is with the seat in front of me not reclined. The padding on the seat had been compressed to death and felt like I was sitting on a rock (with textures).... And thus opens the next 11 hours of hell.... No personal entertainment device that we had grown accustomed to on JAL and Thai air... The movie screen was a little 10" monitor about 15 feet away. We did get to watch 4 movies (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, My Super Ex-Girlfriend, A Prairie Home Companion, and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift) and that killed some time.

The staff was really nice and served drinks, water, snacks, and two lunches ( The food was edible and reasonably fresh and hot ).

All and all the fight was ok and we got to Japan, but we found they now have 5 different classes on the plane, and what we had been used to as Economy Class was now a upgrade to Economy Plus.

Water was nice and clean, trees gave cool shades, beautiful scenery and small creatures. It was almost therapeutic just to be in such a wonderful nature. So fishing at Tuolumne river was one of my main reasons why I wanted to come to Yosemite.

Yesterday evening, I had sudden urge to go fishing. It was already getting dark outside, but I had to go. Keath and Kodiak agreed to come with me. We packed fishing tools quickly and started walking towards the dam. Walked around the pond and entered the trail, we realized the level of water was really really low. Even at the dam, water level was almost 3 feet lower than the edge of dam, not like last year with full of water and the width of the river is almost 1/3 of its full width. Instead of water, there's huge sand bar in the middle. Keath checked the shallow stream and noticed some fish still there. If there is fish, we have to try, don't we?

As the result, Keath got a baby (about 6 inches long). Too small to bring home. Say good-bye to the kid and release him back to the stream. See you next year! It's really dark and cold already. I was really disappointed, almost sad to see the changes of the river, no catch and too cold as I forgot to grab jacket. I wish I could come here a couple weeks ago when the river was still full of water and fish.

During Kodiak's walk this evening, we decided to check the other parts of the same river. One section was shallow, but still has nice flow and, and, and FISH! Yey yey yey yey! Sorry Kodiak. We need to go back to RV and get the fishing tools.

I heard it before that "the fish you can see is the fish you cannot catch". I don't remember when and where I heard about this, well, it's true. We can see lots of trout swimming, chasing each other, or making splash right in front of our eyes. But, nobody wants to play with our lure or yummy bites. Smart fish.

After trying different methods, Miki caught 1 good size trout. Clean up and bring it back to home. There must be hundreds of good recipe to cook trout. As fish-eater Japanese, I'd rather cook it simple to enjoy its freshness. Means – salt the fish and gill it on BBQ. I wish we could have wood campfire and grill these fish… It must be the best way to eat fresh fresh-water fish. Unfortunately, the fire danger level is really high in Yosemite and no wood campfire now. (I bought marshmallows, chocolate and graham crackers… Sad)

Kodiak is also fish-eater Japanese (dog). He was stirring at our main dish during the dinner. Sorry Kodiak. We can't share this with you because you have very sensitive stomach. Trust me, this is tough love. LOL

The whole area is covered with blackberry bushes, which are all full of berries. We tasted some and it was really good. So this morning, my main job is – to pick some blackberries! (Not those blackberry device addicts! (CrackBerrys?))

Make sure to wear long pant since blackberry vine has thorns like roses. Tiny, but sharp thorns give your hands and legs nice itchy scratch. Grab a container and my good body Sony CyberShot and go!

At the beginning, I was more playing with thorns than blackberries. Man, such a friendly thorns! It really wants me. After few scratches, I started learning where and how to pick berries. Once I get used to it, I was hopping from this vine to other vine like honeybee. Shortly after, I filled the whole container with blackberries and headed back home.

Keath was impressed how much I picked and decided to weigh it. 10 oz! Wow! That's a lot! hhhmmmm… How are we gonna eat… Muffin? Sounds good. Pancake or Belgian Waffles? Then need whipped cream. It will be nice to throw some in yogurt. O! Blackberry salad dressing will be Nouvelle Cuisine a la Yosemite. LOL

Keath, Kodiak and I went to Jamestown and Sonora in the afternoon. While cruising in Sonora, we saw a sign said "Turkey Ranch". That sounds much more fun than walking around the old downtown area. Let's go check the big ugly birds.

Well, turkey ranch was filled with turkey. Look around you and all you see is turkey. And they are watching you, too. For some reason, Watching the farm instead of something like petting zoo I expected to see, I was overwhelmed by hundreds of turkeys and their smell. Take some pictures and drive back to the town.
Even he is sleeping, as soon as he hears the word "Cow", he jumps up and come to check outside. We have no idea why he likes cow this much. He never encounters any cow from close distance.
